While working on The Laramie Project, the director was really into the idea of the show building upon itself. The design team and I ran with that and had the show start on an empty stage, with no masking, but as the show progressed more elements would appear onstage. This included the performers moving the the set pieces, changing parts of their costumes on stage, and flying in set pieces and soft goods at rhythmically sound times.
As this was my first design credit, I met many challenges I didn’t even think about, like how masking would affect light placement, or interpersonal meetings and how my work had to be organized to make sense to a team of designers. I am proud of how much I learned from this show, and It will always hold a soft spot in my heart.
